2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Regional Semifinal, Carson vs. Damonte Ranch

To the Regional Championship!!!  Carson defeats Damonte Ranch 27-10 in the NIAA Division 1 Northern Region Football Semifinals and will face Reed High Friday, November 22nd for the Championship!

Much like the first time Carson hosted Damonte this was a battle but Carson make a few key plays and capitalized on mistakes made by Damonte… it all paid off and the Senators will take their winning ways to the Regional Championship!  Well done fellas!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 Soccer, Carson High Regional Playoffs

Just a quick post… Congrats to the Carson High Girls and Boys soccer teams for their first round playoff wins… Here are a few shots from last night’s boys match at Carson High School…

Playoffs resume tonight at Damonte Ranch High School for the NIAA Division 1 Regional Semifinals.  The girls play tonight, the boys tomorrow… 4:15 and 6:15.  Tonight (girls) Carson plays Reno and Douglas plays Galena… the winners advance to the Regional Final Saturday and both teams automatically advance to State.  Tomorrow Carson plays Spanish Springs (a rematch of last year’s penalty kick ending regional championship…) and Galena plays Wooster.  Same deal for the fellas, the winner tonight play Saturday for the Regional Championship and next week for State…!

Onto the photos! These all say “It’s playoff time” to me!

This is soccer… yes, they’re both fouling… no there wasn’t a call… this is soccer… going hard at it, well done boys!!131105_instaimage_Carson High Soccer_CHDrive Christina Hernandez ROCKETED one into the upper corner… my opinion, his best goal yet… and I’ve seen a lot of his over the last four years… 🙂131105_instaimage_Carson High Soccer_Christian Hernandez Goal Zack pushed up and got a lot more involved with the attack last night, it was good to see, he’s not one that I’d like coming up too much if I was the opposing defense….131105_instaimage_Carson High Soccer_Zach Smith ControlYou have to applaud the attempt… it ended up a bit high but he went for it…!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Douglas vs. Carson

With football there’s always a winner.  If tied at the end of regulation there’s a “shootout” at  the end to determine the winner.  If you weren’t at the Carson Douglas football game last night at Keith Roman Field at Douglas High you missed a great one!  If you were at the game and you didn’t anticipate what you witnessed, bet you’ll think better next year! 🙂

This year’s game was every bit of what I expected!  Watching what’s been happening on the field and watching the standings I knew all that would be thrown out the window, this is rivalry football and the Carson Douglas game at Douglas last night was a tough battle between two long time rivals.  Here’s some of what I captured last night… you’ll see a theme pretty quickly… or at least I did… 🙂

131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_Joey RunCale Kynett had his hand on this ball for a long time before he eventually created a Chase sandwich with his fellow Douglas defenders and stripped it out of his hands… see the next photo… 🙂

131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_StudentsDuring any game there are moments that you capture and one’s that you miss, every time you set yourself up ready for the play, you’re taking a gamble that you’ll be in the “right” place to capture “the big play”… Last night, no question I missed the play of the game… After seeing the play happen (and saying things I shouldn’t as it was happening because I knew I was missing it…) and thinking about how it happened… I’m not even sure I know where I should have been to capture it… Carson outside defensive back #2 Aaron Perez, who I’ve been trying to capture the whole year without much luck, picked off a pass and ran for a touchdown that tied the game at 13… no question, play of the game… and I missed it.  I’m sorry Mom.  I’m sorry Aaron.

2013 NIAA Varsity Football… Double Duty October 24, 2013

Wow is about all I can say for the Sierra League NIAA Division 1 football season!  With Division 1 split into two leagues and “league” play coming the last half of the season you really never know what the “pre-season” tea leaves might tell you… and this year, I don’t think ANYONE’S prediction was as wild as what we’ve seen this year!

This year I advertised in the Reno Gazette Journal’s Football Preview “magazine”… the lead off article was “Who will step from the shadows”… and at the time I thought that was a very appropriate lead… I had the same thoughts myself, in my mind there wasn’t any one player that was expected to create a significant “problem” for any opponent as we’ve seen in past years… with one league game week left we’ve got quite a situation that has developed in the Sierra League….

A big Congratulations to the Carson Senators for their League Championship.  I know they have unfinished business and there will be a lot of pressure this week to continue their success… Carson/Douglas this week!

So this past Thursday night I made an attempt to try double duty, a first half at one school and the second half at another… not my normal style but I gave it a try… I started at Galena… Here are two from that game…

I’ve grown to like the turf at most of the high school fields but the natural grass at Galena offers some cool things with flying grass… not sure the grass coming up here is from Ben (… sorry Ben…) but it’s something you don’t get to see on the turf. 🙂131024_instaimage_Galena High Football_Ben Barnard Touchdown… and I “caught” this one too! 131024_instaimage_Galena High Football_CatchAt halftime, with info from my “sources” (thanks!!) 2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 Soccer, Carson High vs. Damonte Ranch High

… and we’re onto the next games… 🙂  The “honeymoon” of last night’s game is over, back out at the Carson High field this morning for Soccer!  Carson hosted Damonte for one of the final regular season games of the year, just three league games left before playoffs after today…

The girls tied 1-1 with a late equalizer from Damonte and the Carson boys coasted to a 6-1 win with most of their goals coming in the second half.

Here are some photos from the games…

The light… meaning the sun, is impressively harsh during these early morning soccer games… the thought is always that there’s a lot of light so that’s good… well, kinda… you have to be very careful where you shoot from to get a nice exposure on the players.  You can see here in the photos how hard the shadows are on the “shadowed” side of the faces and bodies… gotta work with what you’ve got sometimes! 🙂

See the 2nd thru 5th photos for the shadows… the first one is a good example of what I mean… the sun is far enough around that it’s doing a nice job of wrapping both players and it looks quite nice… shooting from the right position and being patient for something to happen can be difficult. 🙂131019_Carson High Soccer_midfield battle131019_Carson High Soccer_midfield battle 2131019_Carson High Soccer_Flying head shot 131019_Carson High Soccer_Flying shot131019_Carson High Soccer_Zack shot

2013 NIAA Varsity Football… Carson High vs. Galena High…

What a night for High School Football in Northern Nevada… particularly the games at Carson High and Douglas High… After three weeks of “league play”, what most in the North State had predicted and seen through the the first four weeks of “cross league” play has been thrown out the window…

I’ve been anticipating this Carson/Galena game all year.  After last year’s thrashing Carson took at Galena (on senior night…) and knowing this would be Senior night for the Senators, I knew it would be a good matchup at Carson High. I hadn’t seen Galena play yet this year but when I saw the score last week of the Galena/Manogue game last Saturday I instantly got very excited about this game… and WOW, it did not disappoint!

As I was looking over the photos to choose for this post something became very clear to me, this was a battle, and a battle EVERYWHERE on the field.  Clearly with an ending score of 27-26 you can tell that there’s a lot more to the story and I would encourage you to get the newspapers and if possible get the game film and watch it… I can’t really add much… so enjoy the photos. 🙂

The Senators take the field… Congrats Seniors, tonight was your night!

For me, the game didn’t really get interesting until the second half, which is pretty typical for me at a Carson High game… there’s a magical power in the Carson High locker room during halftime… that magic is the Carson High Coaching Staff….

This play stood out to me at the time… what seems like a simple point after attempt struck me… those Senators are pretty close… it would prove profound later in the game!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Carson vs. Damonte Ranch

Carson hosted Damonte Ranch for their first “League” match up and the two teams certainly gave us an interesting game!

Before the fourth quarter started I was walking the sidelines wondering what to write… and now that the game is over I’m still wondering what to write after that fourth quarter!  WOW! I’m not even going to try to begin to explain all that happened, it was like a pinball game at points, with 21 points coming between two teams in a matter of seconds… grab your local paper and get the story with the details, it was a wild ride!

Just a few images for this post, I’ve gotta get back to Carson High for Soccer early Saturday…

First, it was Carson’s Homecoming!  Congrats to Rachel Streeter and Tony Cacioppo!

A happy accident… and a photography lesson…

The life of a photographer… I take a fair number of photos over the course of a year, not as many as some, a lot more than others… sometimes I’ve got my “A” game (as good as that might be…) and sometimes I’m not “feeling it”… but like falling off a horse or a bike, you’ve gotta get back on and get to work… trying to produce something good….

Last night at the Carson High Freshman and Jr. Varsity football games I fell into the later category… I’ve been sick for nearly three weeks, cough, sniffles, etc., you know, that crud that we’re all passing around… my family somehow got over it in 4 days… I’m on the 4 week plan… anyway…

So… (… get to the point… 🙂 ) Last night, completely by accident I ended up with this shot… 131003_instaimage_Carson High Football_interceptionPlease be honest, tell me what you think… I think it’s very cool… You can clearly tell who this is… it shows action, you see the ball, you see the speed of the game… It’s an absolutely perfect example of what I’ve been preaching to people they can take with ANY digital camera that is or has been available since around 2004ish….

Wait… what?  Everyone knows I have this big camera and lens… and yes, I took this shot with that camera… however… I quite frankly was absolutely not meaning to do this… it was an accident, a very happy accident in my opinion but none-the-less an accident, but it doesn’t have to be.

The camera settings were ISO 800, 1/60 of a second, f/2.8.

So what does that mean…

The reason I have that big camera and lens is because that big camera and lens will go up to a native ISO of 51,200.  And the reason I have that lens is because it is an f/2.8 maximum aperture.

(interpretation… not in camera geek speak…)

Remember a camera is a tool for me, much like a hammer for a carpenter… I need the tools to do the job I’m trying to accomplish… hence, why I have the gear I do…

So let’s look at what all this means…

The camera settings were ISO 800, 1/60 of a second, f/2.8.

ISO is what we used to have in the film days as ASA… most people are familiar with ASA 100, 200, 400… maybe 800… well ISO is the equivalent we have with digital camera… and it’s the same, 100, 200, 400, 800… it doubles (yes there are marks in between but those are 1/3 stops… for a later discussion…).  ISO is the camera’s sensitivity to light, each “stop” it doubles the amount of sensitivity… So that big camera I have will go… 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600, 3,200, 6,400, 12,800, 25,600 & 51,200 (“natively”… again, another discussion…).  So as anyone that has shot at any youth field or gym ANYWHERE, you can’t sugar coat it… the light sucks, it’s just terrible… hence the new cameras have these new insane ISO capabilities.

Aperture… my lens is f/2.8.  This is a more confusing part of photography for some because it seems backwards until you understand what that number means… The smaller number the more light is let through the lens… a lens aperture is the ratio of focal length to effective aperture diameter (or the amount that the lens is closed at the time of exposure)…  So the smaller the number the less the lens is “closed” at the time of exposure.  The reason the lens I have is so big is to let in a lot of light.  When you go from 2.8 to 4.0 you’re cutting the light in half… and again from 4.0 to 5.6 half again as much.  So you can see the tricky thing with photography here… you need a lot of light.

So what does this all mean for you?  Let’s look at those settings again…

ISO 800, 1/60th, f/2.8

ALL of you have a camera that will go to ISO 800, most will go at least 1,600 (some as high as 12,800… or more…).

Your lens is most likely f/5.6 at the longest focal length you have… so for example the lens is a 55-300mm f/3.5-5.6.  This means at 300mm your lens is a f/5.6 aperture (and at 55mm it’s a f/3.5, it’s a variable aperture lens, very common “kit” type lens).

So that leaves the 1/60th of a second part… (to give you a point of reference, “portraits” are generally taken around 1/100 or 1/125th of a second to “freeze” a person that is sitting, not moving…) as you increase motion that number must get faster to “freeze” action… for example, I shoot most sports at 1/1,000th of a second or faster… a lot of you tell me your photos are blurry… this is the reason why.  Take a look at the photo above… it’s blurry, but the 18 is kinda sharpish… kinda, but the whole effect is pretty cool.  So generally I’d shoot this scene at around 1/1,000th of a second… (this works kinda the same… the numbers double… 1/125, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1,000 and again the light doubles or halves depending on which direction you’re going on the scale…)

Photography is all about compromise.  What I’ve discussed above is called the exposure triangle, ISO (800), Shutter (1/60), Aperture (2.8).  As one setting moves, another has to change to accommodate to keep a “proper” exposure, hence keeping the triangle shape and giving you the same potential “look”.  So let’s assume you have the lens I described above at 300mm it’s f/5.6.  So from 5.6 to 4.0 to 2.8 is called two “stops” of light.  So to get the same image we need to change one of the other settings two stops, or some combination of changes to get two stops of light back because the hinderance of the lens we’re using…. To keep this simple and relevant to a lot of the cameras I see people shooting… let’s also say your camera will go to ISO 3,200.  So by simply setting your camera to ISO 3,200 and zooming to 300mm (f/5.6) (shoot in Aperture Priority, A for Nikon users or AV for Canon users…) you’ll have about a shutter speed of 1/60th of a second (… in the light in that portion of the field)….  THEN… you need to move with the action, called panning, and press the shutter button as you move with the action…  The panning does take some practice (I learned the hard way using film a long time ago…) but you can see what type of a photo you can get with this technique.

So… for those of you with a Nikon D3000, D3100, D3200, D5000, D40, D90, D60, etc. (lower end without high ISO) or Canon Rebel of pretty much any vintage… try this technique, your camera isn’t useless, you just have to use the tool differently….

Happy shooting!

Shoot me any questions, I’d be happy to answer!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 Football, Carson vs. North Valleys

I never know how these games are going to start… let alone end… throughout the game you try to get yourself into a position to get some interesting shots, make sure that you “catch” the highlights of the game, etc., etc… Friday Night’s game, Carson vs. North Valleys was no different.  It opened with this… Brady getting into the backfield and making a tackle… maybe a sign of things to come?130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_Brady TackleNorth Valleys seemed to be moving the ball fairly well, their quarterback seemed to read the Carson defense fairly well and then the next thing that happened was this… Nevin picking up a fumble and running it in for a touchdown!130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_Nevin Touchdown

This gave North Valleys the ball back… and they marched down the field and scored… wait, what’s going on… they seemed to make their way down the field pretty easily, were we going to have a scoring shootout here or what?

North Valleys kicked off to Joey who said b-bye and ran 98 yards for a touchdown…130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_Joey Touchdown

By now we’ve got about 6:20 or so to go in the first quarter… yea, 1/2 of the first quarter was gone and the Carson offense had yet to see the field and it was 14-6 Carson…!!! Things kinda settled down after this… I think the tone was set, Carson’s defense and special teams had already scored touchdowns… and very quickly after taking the field the Carson offense put up another 7 with a short touchdown run… Here’s Carson quarterback Garrett passing during their first drive of the game.130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_QB ThrowCarson didn’t look back… in the second quarter Garrett connected with Dilyn for an 86 yard TD pass… you’ll have to go in the Carson gallery and check out this entire series… how Dilyn caught that pass with that coverage… good stuff fellas!130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_Rooker Catch Garrett added a short QB keeper in the third quarter….130920_instaimage_Carson High Football_Garrett TouchdownCarson is on the road to Reed next week and back October 4th for Homecoming against Damonte Ranch.
