MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 3, Houston Dynamo FC 3
San Jose rallies from two goals down to earn draw, extend unbeaten streak in all competitions to seven games; Quakes now embark on road trip starting with archrival LA Galaxy on Wednesday
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes drew with Houston Dynamo FC 3-3 on Saturday night in Major League Soccer regular-season play at PayPal Park to extend their unbeaten streak in all competitions to seven games.
The Earthquakes almost got on the board first in the seventh minute but Josef Martínez’s shot from point-blank range was stopped in the box by Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond. In minute 21, Martínez again broke free down the middle of the box, this time off a feed from Hernán López, but Bond got a hand on the shot in the last moment once more to slap it away. Instead, the visitors got the breakthrough in the 31st minute when Griffin Dorsey streaked down the right wing in transition and crossed it in for Ezequiel Ponce, who finished the play to give Houston the lead. The Dynamo almost doubled their advantage 10 minutes later off a free kick but Edwards Jr. leaped to tip a Dorsey attempt over the crossbar to keep the deficit 1-0 at the half.
Houston pulled ahead 2-0 in the 50th minute when off the sequence of a corner kick, Felipe Andrade’s header from the left side of the six-yard box found the back of the net. San Jose almost pulled one back in the 54th minute when López crossed it in from the left wing for Martínez, but his header bounced off the woodwork. In the 59th minute, López threaded a through ball into the box for Martínez, but once again, Bond closed the angle and parried the shot on goal out of play. In minute 62, Beau Leroux got his head on a cross but Bond turned him away, too.
San Jose then exploded for three goals in 10 minutes to start and complete a rousing comeback. In the 66th minute, the Quakes’ attack finally beat the Houston goalkeeper in the 66th minute when second-half substitution Preston Judd directed a DeJuan Jones cross into the net to make it 2-1. In the 72nd minute, Judd made it a brace when he headed home an Ian Harkes cross for the 2-2 equalizer. Then four minutes later, Daniel Munie skied to head another Harkes cross past Bond to give San Jose their first lead of the night, 3-2.
However, Houston would answer in the 91st minute when the Dynamo caught the Quakes in transition and Dorsey emerged to score the tying goal. San Jose subsequently tried earnestly to recapture the lead in stoppage time, but the final whistle blew and the two teams split the points.
The Black and Blue will now travel to take on the LA Galaxy on Wednesday, May 28. Kickoff from Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California, will take place at 7:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally via MLS Season Pass on Apple TV (English/Spanish), as well as via local radio KSFO 810 AM (English) and 1370 AM La Kaliente (Spanish).
GAME NOTES
The Earthquakes are currently 10-19-5 all-time vs. Houston Dynamo FC (44 GF, 55 GA) with an 8-6-4 (27 GF, 21 GA) home record.
San Jose is currently on a seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions (4-0-3).
Heading into tonight, the Quakes’ attack led all MLS with 29 goals. To celebrate, the club gave away 2,900 hot dogs to fans before the match. With another three goals tonight, the Quakes stayed atop the league leaderboard with 32 goals and 34.13 expected goals.
Preston Judd scored his first and second MLS goals of the season, as well as the fifth and sixth goals of his career. Combined with his goal and assist in Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup play, he’s up to four goal contributions in all competitions (2g/2a).
DeJuan Jones, recently called up to the U.S. Men’s National Team for June training camp ahead of the Concacaf Gold Cup, amassed his fourth assist of the season and 26th of his MLS career.
The Quakes stayed unbeaten (3-0-3) in all games started by recent acquisition DeJuan Jones, who joined the team via trade with the Columbus Crew last month.
Ian Harkes had his first two assists of the MLS season tonight, running his career total to eight. He also had a goal vs. Inter Miami in his last league outing, giving him three goal contributions in his last two matches.
Daniel Munie’s 76th minute go-ahead goal was the first one of his MLS career.
Cristian Espinoza continues to lead all MLS with eight assists and 51 key passes.
Earl Edwards Jr.’s shutout streak in all competitions ended at 197 minutes after conceding Ezequiel Ponce’s 31st-minute goal.
Luca Ulrich, acquired via short-term loan earlier today from the Quakes’ MLS NEXT Pro team, The Town FC, was an unused substitute backing up Earl Edwards Jr. at goalkeeper.

“I give our players a lot of credit for coming back down from two goals and basically have the game won at the end. We didn’t manage the game very well at the end.”
“I think we could have done better on all the goals. We could have scored more goals. We should have come in at halftime ahead. We had some very good chances. We just have to be a little bit cleaner.”
On the Quakes’ seven-game unbeaten streak in all competitions:
“I mean, I’m not ready to have parade in downtown San Jose. We should have had three points.”
On the upcoming matched against LA Galaxy and St. Louis CITY SC:
“The team has done well over the last two or three weeks. We have two difficult games next week—to go to L.A. against a team that hasn’t won a game in 15 games. They’re going to be very well-prepared to try to get their first one of the year. That’ll be very challenging—as will the game in St. Louis. We have to step up and get it right there. Then take the break that we have and hopefully be prepared for the second half of this season.”
EARTHQUAKES FORWARD PRESTON JUDD
On coming back from a two-goal deficit in the second half to secure a draw:
“I think we’re trying to build our culture to never say die. We were down 2-0 and nobody really stopped believing. The result feels like a loss after the tie after we went up 3-2, but I think it’s a good learning point and to know we’re always in the game.”
“It feels a little disappointing with the draw. … I think we deserved three points there, but we did get a point down 2-0 so it’s a positive point.”
On scoring a brace off the bench against the Houston back line:
“Josef [Martínez] helped me out there because they paid a lot of attention to him, so I was able to get on their back shoulders, and they didn’t know where I was at, so I took advantage of that and finished those chances when I got them.”
“I think throughout my whole career I’ve been behind great players, and sitting behind them and learning from them is important. But when I get an opportunity, it’s important to take advantage of that. I think tonight I showed I’m ready to play when called upon.”
On any differences between last year and this year’s team:
“I try not to think too much about last year, but I think last year was just very unlucky. We’d get an unlucky bounce, or an unlucky call in the last 10 minutes, so it kind of felt inevitable at some points last year. And this year, we have the players. We have the passion. We have the grit to make a result out of it. We’re not going to stop believing.

MATCH RECAP: Earthquakes 0, Houston Dynamo 1
Visitors score goal in 86th minute to break deadlock; Quakes look ahead to Saturday road match vs. Minnesota United FC
SAN JOSE, Calif. — The San Jose Earthquakes were defeated by the Houston Dynamo 1-0 on Wednesday night at PayPal Park.
After a scoreless first half, both teams began to settle in. In the 50th minute, Quakes forward Cristian Espinoza appeared to have drawn a penalty kick after locking legs with Houston defender Micael dos Santos in the box, but video review called it back. The Dynamo went on the attack with several threatening chances, but San Jose goalkeeper Jacob Jackson and the Quakes’ back line rebuffed 21 consecutive shots. However, in the 86th minute, Amine Bassi and Daniel Steres connected for the visitors’ go-ahead goal.
The Quakes will now travel to St. Paul, Minnesota, to take on Minnesota United FC on Saturday, July 20. Kickoff from Allianz Field is set for 5:30 p.m. PT and will be broadcast globally on MLS Season Pass on Apple TV, as well as on local radio AM 810 The Spread (English) and AM 1370 La Kaliente (Spanish).
GAME NOTES
As of tonight’s final whistle, San Jose’s record now stands at 4-18-2 (14th in West; 14 pts), while the Houston Dynamo goes to 9-7-7 (8th in West; 34 pts).
San Jose is now 10-19-4 (41 GF, 53 GA) in the all-time series against Houston and 8-6-3 at home (24 GF, 18 GA).
Tonight’s match marked Quakes midfielder and team captain Jackson Yueill’s 200th MLS appearance since joining the club as an MLS SuperDraft first-round pick out of UCLA back in 2017 (6th overall).
Additionally, Quakes forwards Cristian Espinoza and Jeremy Ebobisse started Wednesday’s match, extending their MLS-leading active consecutive games played streaks to 98 and 97, respectively.
Espinoza remains only one goal contribution away from 100 for the Earthquakes (31g/68a). Only Chris Wondolowski’s 207 (167g/40a) and Ronald Cerritos’ 108 (61g/47a) are higher totals among San Jose players, past or present. Quakes assistant coach Steve Ralston had 115 goal contributions (42g/73a) for the New England Revolution during his playing days.
Former Quakes goalkeeper Andrew Tarbell (2016-20) and midfielder Jan Greguš (2022) were unused substitutes for Houston.

“It was a pretty even game. I thought the guys came out, connected passes, created some chances, defended really well. We played a team that prides themselves on keeping the ball, with really close central combinations. I thought we limited a lot of their chances. Unfortunately, they scored late in the game and that was it.”
On the team’s performance in attack:
“I felt like we missed some passes that would have created some really big chances on goal. I think it was more of that than the actual chances on goal. So just a few sloppy chances that would have created something. … We did create a little bit, but it’s got to be better.”
On trying to keep the team fresh with a third game this week on Saturday:
“We have three games in a week, so you want to focus on every game, but it’s a heavy week. So keeping guys fresh for the next game as well is a challenge. You’re definitely trying to win the game, and I think the subs that came on did a good job, and I think we’ll be fresh enough for Minnesota to field a really strong lineup.”
On the defense’s improvement during the homestand:
“I think defensively it’s been better, but now we got to get the attack going. It’s always that fine line. Going back into a back four, I thought we would create more tonight. But it’s just a matter of every player buying in defensively, being compact, tucking in, winning your tackles. It’s the small details. If you do that as a collective, you start seeing results.”
EARTHQUAKES DEFENDER BENJI KIKANOVIĆ
On the team’s effort tonight:
“I thought the energy and the fight was pretty good this game, compared to our usual. So obviously, I think I should have had a goal. And we maybe had a couple other chances to put a goal away, and maybe it’s different. But I think if we come with that fight and intensity, and just a little bit of extra grit, I think we’ll be OK at Minnesota.”
On playing right back:
“I mean, as you can see, we’re kind of experimenting a little bit with wingbacks. And then we went back to a four[-defender] back line. So just little tweaks like that. I don’t really think it’s too big of a change. Obviously, you have me playing there, which I don’t normally play there. But I try my best for the team wherever they put me. I’m actually going to work. But, in terms of that, I think the coaching staff does a good job in terms of just preparation, especially Ian. He’s a smart coach, and he knows what he’s doing.”
On the team’s defense improving of late:
“Everyone in the back, we try to do our best that we can. So it’s not just me and whoever else, it’s just, it’s a team effort. So, you got to put everyone in the category. But I do think that if we could tighten up the back, which I feel like we have been in the past couple games, but we just got to put the chances away. So I feel like if we put our chances away, then it’s a different game. But if we don’t, then it’s tough to win if you don’t score. Obviously, not giving up goals is nice, but you got to score to win.”
On the importance of winning second balls:
“There are a few plays where we kind of won the second ball and almost got something from it. But that’s kind of the strategy behind lumping forward, have me fight for the first one and get that knocked down, which we haven’t been doing too good of a job. Today was better. Last game, we didn’t win many second balls. But today was a little bit better. So hopefully, we can keep improving.”

SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES INTERIM HEAD COACH ALEX COVELO On the mistakes committed tonight: “I think the mistake [on the first goal] was an individual mistake, and on the second goal we had to keep the ball out when there wasn’t a clear moment to build up, and that’s it. I don’t think it was because we were building up in the back that Houston had those opportunities. I think we committed individual mistakes and that’s why it’s a very simple analysis today.”
On why he didn’t make more substitutions: “When you look at the team that we finished with, we had Jebo [Jeremy Ebobisse], who has 11 goals. You have Jamiro [Monteiro], an amazing quality player. We tried to be more offensive by bringing Jackson [Yueill] back as a ‘six’ and putting in Jack Skahan in his place, and with Cade [Cowell] and Cristian [Espinoza] trying to find crosses or individual actions on top. Shea Salinas has a Covid situation. We missed Marcos Lopez [due to yellow card accumulation]. Judson is injured because he has an old injury bothering him. So that’s all we have.”
SAN JOSE EARTHQUAKES MIDFIELDER JAMIRO MONTEIRO
On what Houston did to shut San Jose’s midfield down: “I didn’t feel like they were making it hard for me. They were really compact, so we didn’t have a lot of space in the midfield, but it wasn’t like they were hard on me. We didn’t have enough space in this game and a lot of our balls were coming from the side instead of the midfield.”
On how he will move past this result: “I just forget this game. It already happened. We lost. Now we’re onto next week. We still have 14 games. Tomorrow is a new day. We have a new week, new chances. Every week is a new chance for us.”####
