2013 Tahoe Invitational Hockey Tournament

Time files when you’re having fun… well this weekend FLEW by!  So I must have had fun… but I’m too groggy to really remember… 🙂

Between 6:00 AM on Friday morning and 4:00 PM on Monday (so roughly 82 hours) we spent 51.5 hours at the South Tahoe Ice Arena for the 2013 MLK Tahoe Invitational Hockey Tournament.  This event is in every way a very challenging event for us, long hours, little sleep (11 hours of sleep total, 4.5 hours of driving), very cold conditions… but this year I figured out something that made a HUGE difference…. There’s a power outlet right behind where I stand for two of the three periods of each game.  I know, you’re thinking “… so what, what’s the big deal…”… well… can you say heater?  I plugged in two heaters and went from miserable to happy in no time flat!  Next year… I’ll be MUCH better prepared! I still need some help with what to wear, I never quite seem to get it right… but the heaters made things MUCH more comfortable.  I was even “loaning” them out during the times I wasn’t there to the other Photo Moms and Dads that were shooting around where I was…

So onto the photos!  I’m really excited about a lot of the photos this year.  I think being warmer helped a lot, it certainly helped me concentrate better… here’s a selection of the some that I really liked from the weekend.2013 Oakland Hockey_South Tahoe_Goalie Save 2 2013 Tahoe Hockey_South Tahoe_Shot on Goal2013 Oakland Hockey_South Tahoe_Goalie Save 2013 Oakland Hockey_South Tahoe_No Goal 2013 Portland Hockey_South Tahoe_Goalie Save 2013 Santa Rosa Hockey_South Tahoe_Shot on Goal 2013 Stockton Hockey_South Tahoe_Shot on Goal Eyes 2013 Tahoe Hockey_South Tahoe_Goalie Save

2013 Douglas High Basketball vs. Bishop Manogue High

Douglas hosted Bishop Manogue tonight for the Jr Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys basketball games.  Manogue won the JV Boys and Varsity Girls games but Douglas’ Varsity Boys rolled away with a pretty easy win… Douglas will host Carson this coming Friday night for the first of the home and away series between Carson and Douglas….

Onto the action!

A few shots from the Girls game…

130115_Manogue_instaimage_Boys Basketball_1As everyone knows, Hunter Myers is a force on the court… There was a Harvard representative in the stands tonight observing the game (you can actually see him in this photo… he’s next to Hunter’s dad between the two Manogue players…). 🙂  Sometimes you get lucky!

Not everyone will have the “opportunity” to play with someone this dynamic… when you can practice an alley-oop… and pull it off in a game, that’s fun stuff!  Enjoy the ride Douglas High, these opportunities don’t come around very often!130115_Douglas_instaimage_Boys Basketball_Hunter Meyers_2

2013 Carson High Basketball vs. North Valleys

Carson hosted North Valleys for the JV Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys games.  It was a sweep for the Senators!  The crowd was… well… I know it’s a new year and… well… I’ll be nice… the place was empty (come on people… the weather wasn’t THAT bad and you missed some good action last night…)

Carson’s next games will at Douglas Friday the 18th… I will not be able to attend the games at Douglas this year… it’s our annual Tahoe Invitational Hockey Tournament in South Lake Tahoe….

On to the action…

Some second half action in the Boys JV game… the referee that you can see behind pretty easily called this one… have two shots from the line Cody! 🙂130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys JV Basketball_Foul2Now that I have some “inventory” of images of the teams I’m looking around for something different… new angles, etc…. trying a different angle here… but as you can see… bare stands… would be pretty cool if there were people in those stands…!!!130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys JV Basketball_Drive99 times out of 100 I’d delete this image in camera because it’s not making anyone look particularly “good”… but I just couldn’t resist this one.  Yes, the referee called this one (how could you NOT?) so to the free throw line Carson went… moments like this captured in time make me wonder what the intent of the player fouling was… 🙂130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys JV Basketball_FoulThe Girls started out quick, full press and then a few layups later they were cruising to a pretty easy win.  I’ve been very impressed with the Varsity Girls and what new Coach Nate Tolbert has accomplished this year.  After the first game at Reno I think people had concerns, they’ve put their head down and gone after playing what fits the tools they have, it’s been fun to watch.

130111_Carson_instaimage_Girls Basketball_DriveI think Elena is one of the most intense players in Northern Nevada.  Always giving everything she’s got, laying it all out there!  Great to see!130111_Carson_instaimage_Girls Basketball_ShotOnto the Boys Varsity… again, working on a different angle… (I need that crowd in the stands please…!!!  please…)…130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys Basketball_LayupAnd shooting wide… this resulted in a foul… we’ll take two from the line, thank you…130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys Basketball_Shot… and Kyle “floating” out of the corner…130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys Basketball_DriveI like the intensity in Dylin’s eyes.  Great to see you out there Rooker!130111_Carson_instaimage_Boys Basketball_Eyes

2012 Capital Classic Basketball Tournament @ Carson High

The Carson City Lion’s Club hosted their annual Capital Classic Basketball Tournament this week at Carson High.  There were five Northern Division 1 teams and two Northern Division 1A teams… Here’s the list… (if you click you’ll go to the school’s photos too…) 🙂

Carson High

Damonte Ranch High

Incline High

Hug High

Reed High

Sparks High

Wooster High

As usual, I’ll leave the “reporting” to the newspapers… I enjoyed the games, saw some good hard play, teams going for it, teams working to get better… one injury of note to one of the Carson fellas… seven stitches later…. He looked like a boxer in the ER.  🙂

For Carson there’s a break in action for about ten days… they’ll be back in action on December 18th when they travel to McQueen…. See you out at the courts soon!

On to some photos from the event!

Night two… sorry I’m starting out of order… pay close attention to his left hand and his head in the middle and right frame… that backboard is roughly 9 feet off the ground…!!!Sophomore Guard Kyle Steele getting into the mix on night two…Incline High showed a lot of heart never backing down to the Hug High team, Incline when hard until the last whistle.I should have used a photo of this fella making one of his three blocked shots (you’ll have to see the gallery for those…) but I liked this shot too so… 🙂  so many to choose from….

2012-2013 Carson High Basketball vs. Galena…

The home opener for Carson High Jr Varsity Boys, Varsity Girls and Varsity Boys tonight against Galena.  Looks like there are going to be some battles for the Boys Northern Region League Titles this year!  A tough close game for the boys varsity… not so much for the girls varsity… It was a good environment tonight, the crowds were into the game… the Galena students taunting the Carson kids a bit… something about a football game… 😉

Here are some photos from the night…  See many more in the galleries for Carson High Athletics.

Carson High Freshman and Girls Jr Varsity Basketball… vs Reno

Opening night of the basketball season… Carson’s Freshman teams and JV Girls hosted Reno… It’s always great to see the up and coming kids, really gives you a great glimpse of what’s to come for a school in the future!  I think some good things are coming for Carson! 🙂

Here are a few shots from the night… many more in the galleries under Carson High Athletics.

Pop Warner Snow Bowl at Mackay Stadium at UNR!!

Yep, it was COLD… but not as bad as the day before!  What a treat for the kids, to play their championship football games on the turf at UNR!  And they were all good games!  Here’s some action from the day.  Check out a lot more in the galleries for the leagues that played… which were…

Carson Pop Warner

Douglas Pop Warner

Reno Pop Warner

South Tahoe Pop Warner

Sparks Pop Warner

Apparently there were two teams that came into AND left the Championship game having never been scored on… yes, that also means never lost a game either… that’s amazing in youth sports!

Just because they’re “littler” guys doesn’t mean the bodies weren’t flyin’! 🙂Love getting in that face mask and seeing those focused eyes…I’ve been photographing Trey for the last few years… never had it so difficult as this season… The Douglas Unlimited team is one of those never been scored on teams… headed for Florida in two weeks… They run an offense that certainly fits their strengths (they’re BIG kids… let me say that again… they’re BIG…) but this new offense is a lot more running and less of Trey opening up for a pass for me to sneak some shots… makes it tough.  Good luck in Florida boys!

2012 NIAA Northern Region Soccer CHAMPIONS!!! Carson High

Two games, two wins for Carson High!  The boys faced Spanish Springs High and the girls faced Reno High at Damonte Ranch High today.  If you’re a soccer purist, like me, it was a great day for soccer!

The boys played first…  and to a 1-1 tie at the end of regulation AND 30 minutes of OT.  Carson was flawless in penalty kicks winning 5-3.  The girls also ended regulation at 1-1 but 13 minutes into the first overtime period Ms. Sandage scored her second goal of the match to book a second bus to Vegas next week for the State Playoffs!

I’m going to soap box here for just a second… The Carson boys won in penalty kicks after 30 minutes of overtime.  A lot of people don’t like penalty kicks to decide a game.  I am one “purist” that LOVES them.  Here’s why… for as long as I’ve been involved with soccer, since 1979… penalty kicks have been a part of soccer (and for YEARS prior…).  They are an element of the game that few practice, fewer are great at but we’ve all been on both sides of the “result” that a shootout can bear…. then why do I love them?  It’s simple.  If you are not good at them, if you do not practice THIS element of the game, you will not win when the game comes down to PK’s.  To me, that means you are not a “complete” player/team.

And back to the games… Hats off to both the Reno girls and the Spanish Springs boys… great games, great action, a lot of back and forth, great stuff… here are some of the images I captured from the day!  Check out the rest in the galleries.

I’ve got to start with the “group” shot… One school, two trophies!! 🙂… and onto the action…I set up a remote camera… little did I know that we’d have a penalty kick shootout right in front of it today!… and the girls…… Ms. Sandage’s first goal… she later scored the second go ahead goal in OT to win the match.
