2014 Carson High Basketball, Freshman & JV vs. Hug High
Basketball season in Northern Nevada always seems, at least to me, to take a long time to REALLY get rolling… Some teams have just gotten players back from post season football, some games have been rescheduled because of weather… this season has followed that same pattern. With our nasty weather Carson’s games against Reno were rescheduled to later so the Freshman Girls and Boys and JV Boys teams hosting Hug Tuesday was the first “league” game (although all of them have played several games already…).
Here are some shots from the night at Carson High… (check out more in the galleries…)

NIAA State Division 1 Semifinal Football, Reed vs. Liberty
Saturday I ventured up to Bishop Manogue High School to shoot the 2013 NIAA State Division 1 Football Semifinal. Reed High (Sparks) hosted Liberty High (Henderson).
Check out the full gallery here… https://instaimage.com/NIAA/football/2013semifinal
What a FANTASTIC day for football! I shot this pano with my phone at half time… compared to the bitter cold we’ve had and all night games, a big reason I went was simply because the opportunity to shoot with such great conditions! Yes, I was hoping for a great game too… and this one did NOT disappoint! Wow!
As always you try to chat with people around the stadium to get their “take” on the game… with this one, it was all over the board, Liberty was favored, Reed was favored, blah blah blah… when I showed up and started setting up the Liberty kids were warming up at this near end… they have some BIG kids! Wow! Apparently we don’t grow ’em like that up here in the north state! 🙂 Would that be a factor? What did the Football Gods have in store for us today?
I also had an ulterior motive with this game… been messing with the camera and the auto focus settings… trying to get a “better” one… full sunlight, good contrasty uniforms, should make for a good test day… well… I’ll start the photos off with this… Reed’s game winning touchdown… see that blurry bit behind the FANTASTICALLY in focus ref? The camera LOVES the ref… his ultimate contrast uniform is the camera’s biggest delight… I would have completely snarffed this shot anyway so maybe it’s not such a deal but here’s what happens… the real stuff… “… did you get that shot?”… Yes I did… TOTALLY out of focus and there’s a significant “distraction”… but yes, yes I did get it… 🙂 Opps!
So the “scouting reports” say that Reed (who I’ve seen once vs. Carson in the bitter cold last week…) will run a lot but has a good passing game as well and Liberty likes to air it out and has a good passing game… so I tried to get a little quarterback action…
Here Liberty’s quarterback looking to air one out down field on some down and long…
Reed’s quarterback… I just liked these two shots of him….
So after watching this awhile, I had a hunch… I went down to the end zone and waited… and Liberty delivered! Airmail for Liberty #2!
As you can see… 7:31 to go in the 2nd quarter… between hard nosed defense by Reed and HUGE costly penalties by Liberty… we saw 3rd and long… so long I had to take a photo because it’s the “long”est that any of us had ever seen in a football game… 3rd and 51… over half the field!!
Here’s some of that Reed hard nosed defense…
Reed’s running back on his way to a second half touchdown!
So for those of you that didn’t see the game… They battled back and forth for a lot of the game… In my opinion, Reed kinda always had the upper hand, their opening drive for example, after Liberty had burned a BUNCH of time off the clock and missed a field goal… Reed sprinted up the field in two plays and were on the scoreboard 7-0… so there was a lot of back and forth, I score, you score, I score… then we came down to this play… Reed was marching up the field… Liberty intercepted but the Reed wide out turned it all around and stripped the ball from the Liberty player… Did I mention above this was a GREAT football game!
Reed was able to march up the field one last time and go ahead 35-31….
Which led to this attempted… and I say attempted because you have to see the end result in the next photo to understand the outcome…
… with 7 seconds left on the clock the Liberty pass from the above image ended up like this… Reed took a knee with seven seconds to go to go onto the State Championship at UNLV on Saturday, December 7th against Bishop Gorman. Congratulations and good luck to both teams next week!

2013 Carson High Football Season, League Champions 4-0
I’m in a unique position on the Carson High sidelines. I get to see, hear and experience things that few people do and these season ending posts are sometimes difficult for me to write. I want to say something worth reading, maybe even something profound…
I’m want to remind you of the the title you earned through gritty determination and hard work this season.
League Champions
Andy Cooper posted this photo on Facebook at the beginning of the season… I’m posting it again, it’s worth showing again, this is what the Reno Gazette Journal thought you’d do…
It’s funny to me looking back at this article, I remember standing on the sidelines after the rain had fallen… as you were beating McQueen, thinking to myself, “… you’re going to go far this season… it’s going to be a fun season!”… and look! Sierra League Champions (4-0) and the Regional Championship game! Well done fellas!
Here are a few images from the Regional Championship night…
Again, my buddy Ron Harpin was there too, check out his gallery… http://www.rahphotosnv.com/Carson-Football-vs-Reed
An early reception by Alan Cohen… maybe a sign of things to come… Coach Roman always “throwing” something new in to try to confuse the defense.
… a touchdown reception… again Alan Cohen… My buddy Ron (link to his gallery to come soon…) is on the other sidelines getting this from the front side…
I certainly will say that I don’t know the rules all that well for Football… but some the proverbial ball didn’t seem to be bouncing Carson’s way last night… here however was one of a couple occasions that it did… Joey’s signal says it all. First Down Carson!
Nevin Elliot, the Carson Battering Ram… Reed’s big (did I mention Reed was big?) boys still couldn’t hold Nevin down…
Chase after his touchdown reception…
If you’ve been following my posts here you know I like to show that not everything always works out… and well… here you go… Chase Blueberg’s touchdown reception… if you see the series you’ll see that this is indeed Chase… and the previous photo was the celebration after the touchdown… HOWEVER… the catch… well… and you know that shot above with Alan that I have from behind the end zone… my buddy Ron has the ball in the air and the ref’s backside hiding it all… sometimes it just doesn’t matter how many cameras you have pointed at the play… 🙂

2013 NIAA Division 1 State Soccer Championships, hosted by Carson High
The Nevada Division 1 State Soccer Championships were today… the girls match saw Arbor View High from the south defeat Carson High from the North 3-0… In the boys match Eldorado High defeated Palo Verde High 2-0. Congratulations to all the teams competing in the State Championships!
To see the action from the games check out these links…

Here are some shots from the games…
A BEAUTIFUL day for soccer!!
Tried something different with the remote today… and got a pretty decent result…

There was a fair amount of “discussions” with the referee today…
What a great smile!!! Congratulations!!!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Regional Semifinal, Carson vs. Damonte Ranch
To the Regional Championship!!! Carson defeats Damonte Ranch 27-10 in the NIAA Division 1 Northern Region Football Semifinals and will face Reed High Friday, November 22nd for the Championship!
Much like the first time Carson hosted Damonte this was a battle but Carson make a few key plays and capitalized on mistakes made by Damonte… it all paid off and the Senators will take their winning ways to the Regional Championship! Well done fellas!
My buddy Ron Harpin as also at the game shooting… take a look at his gallery…
Here are a few shots from the game….
Chase Blueberg making his run and catch across the middle again…
Alan Cohen in the end zone for a TOUCHDOWN!!!!
I believe this is a photo made for a caption contest…! Clearly you don’t want to be trying to out muscle Aaron Cowee!
Did someone say defense?
Joe Thurman to Dilyn Rooker for 40 yards on 3rd and long… gotta love Coach Roman’s trickery!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 Soccer, Regional Semifinals
The Girls NIAA Northern Region Semifinal Soccer matches were Wednesday night. Carson defeated Reno 3-0 and Galena defeated Douglas 1-0
The Boys NIAA Northern Region Semifinal Soccer matches were Thursday night. Spanish Springs defeated Carson 1-0 and Wooster defeated Galena 2-1 in overtime.
Here are a few photos from the games…
2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 Soccer, Carson High Regional Playoffs
Just a quick post… Congrats to the Carson High Girls and Boys soccer teams for their first round playoff wins… Here are a few shots from last night’s boys match at Carson High School…
Playoffs resume tonight at Damonte Ranch High School for the NIAA Division 1 Regional Semifinals. The girls play tonight, the boys tomorrow… 4:15 and 6:15. Tonight (girls) Carson plays Reno and Douglas plays Galena… the winners advance to the Regional Final Saturday and both teams automatically advance to State. Tomorrow Carson plays Spanish Springs (a rematch of last year’s penalty kick ending regional championship…) and Galena plays Wooster. Same deal for the fellas, the winner tonight play Saturday for the Regional Championship and next week for State…!
Onto the photos! These all say “It’s playoff time” to me!
This is soccer… yes, they’re both fouling… no there wasn’t a call… this is soccer… going hard at it, well done boys!!
Christina Hernandez ROCKETED one into the upper corner… my opinion, his best goal yet… and I’ve seen a lot of his over the last four years… 🙂
Zack pushed up and got a lot more involved with the attack last night, it was good to see, he’s not one that I’d like coming up too much if I was the opposing defense….
You have to applaud the attempt… it ended up a bit high but he went for it…!

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Douglas vs. Carson
With football there’s always a winner. If tied at the end of regulation there’s a “shootout” at the end to determine the winner. If you weren’t at the Carson Douglas football game last night at Keith Roman Field at Douglas High you missed a great one! If you were at the game and you didn’t anticipate what you witnessed, bet you’ll think better next year! 🙂
This year’s game was every bit of what I expected! Watching what’s been happening on the field and watching the standings I knew all that would be thrown out the window, this is rivalry football and the Carson Douglas game at Douglas last night was a tough battle between two long time rivals. Here’s some of what I captured last night… you’ll see a theme pretty quickly… or at least I did… 🙂
Cale Kynett had his hand on this ball for a long time before he eventually created a Chase sandwich with his fellow Douglas defenders and stripped it out of his hands… see the next photo… 🙂

The bodies start flying from here!

Caleb Foster assumed a new role for Douglas tonight… tough game to try new things but he’s one of the best “gamers” in Northern Nevada… don’t think anyone will ever argue with me on that!
Caleb again… here stopped by Aaron Perez on the outside…
Touchdown Joey Thurman… not a particularly good photo but this ended up being the game winning drive in overtime to give the win to Carson 19-13.
Last play of the game by Douglas trying to tie the game in overtime…
… and the celebration by the Carson sidelines…
Coach Roman talking with the team after the game… For those of you that don’t know or weren’t aware… Carson’s Coach Roman played at Douglas High… the field at Douglas High is named after his dad, who was in attendance at the game last night… What do you suppose it’s like to coach against your alma mater on the field that’s named after your father who’s standing on the Douglas sidelines… and win?
This is a “tradition” that I’m very happy to see each game… the Carson team going over and celebrating with the Carson “fan” student section after the game.
During any game there are moments that you capture and one’s that you miss, every time you set yourself up ready for the play, you’re taking a gamble that you’ll be in the “right” place to capture “the big play”… Last night, no question I missed the play of the game… After seeing the play happen (and saying things I shouldn’t as it was happening because I knew I was missing it…) and thinking about how it happened… I’m not even sure I know where I should have been to capture it… Carson outside defensive back #2 Aaron Perez, who I’ve been trying to capture the whole year without much luck, picked off a pass and ran for a touchdown that tied the game at 13… no question, play of the game… and I missed it. I’m sorry Mom. I’m sorry Aaron.
2013 NIAA Varsity Football… Double Duty October 24, 2013
Wow is about all I can say for the Sierra League NIAA Division 1 football season! With Division 1 split into two leagues and “league” play coming the last half of the season you really never know what the “pre-season” tea leaves might tell you… and this year, I don’t think ANYONE’S prediction was as wild as what we’ve seen this year!
This year I advertised in the Reno Gazette Journal’s Football Preview “magazine”… the lead off article was “Who will step from the shadows”… and at the time I thought that was a very appropriate lead… I had the same thoughts myself, in my mind there wasn’t any one player that was expected to create a significant “problem” for any opponent as we’ve seen in past years… with one league game week left we’ve got quite a situation that has developed in the Sierra League….
A big Congratulations to the Carson Senators for their League Championship. I know they have unfinished business and there will be a lot of pressure this week to continue their success… Carson/Douglas this week!
So this past Thursday night I made an attempt to try double duty, a first half at one school and the second half at another… not my normal style but I gave it a try… I started at Galena… Here are two from that game…
I’ve grown to like the turf at most of the high school fields but the natural grass at Galena offers some cool things with flying grass… not sure the grass coming up here is from Ben (… sorry Ben…) but it’s something you don’t get to see on the turf. 🙂
… and I “caught” this one too!
At halftime, with info from my “sources” (thanks!!) I headed over to Manogue where Carson was driving their season to the Championship! Here’s some of the shots I got in the second half of the Carson Manogue game…
Here are three images from Chase Blueberg’s touchdown… no doubt he wanted this one! 🙂
… Nevin doing a little dance!
… and Seamus getting some running action… and a touchdown!
All eyes will be on the Carson Douglas game in Minden, NV this week… stay tuned for what should be a great rivalry game!
