Just a quick photo post… I learned a lot tonight about it… I’ll post more later…
2013 Carson Douglas High School Baseball… mid season tournament
It’s “mid season” time… Spring Break… well… if you’re Washoe County… Carson and Douglas had their Spring Break last week… So goes the majority, so goes the schedule… Spanish Springs is hosting a Spring Break Tournament this week… Day One, originally scheduled for Monday got pushed out 24 hours due to the snow on the fields (thank you!)… Play resumed Tuesday afternoon/evening at Carson High and Spanish Springs….
Carson hosted Douglas for the first game at Carson High… Here are a few shots from the game… I tried something “new”… not sure what I think… I’m not sure if many of you caught the photo that the Nevada Appeal ran awhile back of Tim Lincecum of the SF Giants… this is the same “technique”… if you can call it that… NO Photoshop here, absolutely NONE, this is all in camera… This done in Photoshop would appear much different, less “ghosting” for lack of a better term… (Check out Custom Collages to see an example of that… click here scroll to the bottom…). It’s something different… I’m gonna continue playing with it… I have some ideas on how to use it a little differently that may give me better results… Stay tuned!
2013 Douglas High Baseball vs. Galena
2013 Carson High vs. Reed High Baseball @ Reno Ace’s Ballpark
2013 Galena High Baseball vs. Douglas
I’m back posting to the blog! 🙂 Been out to games lately (adding to the galleries…) but just not posting to the blog, I’ve been working on a project for our old time studio in Monterey, CA (Doc Wenzel’s Old Time Portraits) that consumed a lot of time last week… just “implemented” it on Monday this week….
I made the trek up to Galena today to shoot the Galena Douglas game… and just as I figured it was a great game! This was the second Galena game I’ve been to which ended with a walk off home run to end the game… there’s more to the story though… it’s been the same player in both games…! This time I got it! 🙂 Go Ben!
SUPER windy & rainy… that’s the beauty of baseball photos, you can’t really tell that, they wear caps! Also with a little overcast the harsh shadows on the faces go away… makes for “better” lighting, even though it was a “yucky” day there’s “better” light so possibly “better” photos…
Here’s some action from the day…
Douglas catcher Caleb Foster ready to make the throw to first for an out….

Jimmy King swinging for a hit.
Dillon Lopez added several hits to make this a game!
Douglas’ “workhorse” pitcher Kyle Johnson… great quote in the RGJ from Coach Jacobsen!
Starting pitcher Nathan Barry for Galena.
Relief pitcher Dylan Tockey.
… and after a BUNCH of bench “posturing” from both sides… visits to the mound, chats with batters… we ended the game with this series…
I wonder what Coach McNutt said to Ben Barnard… must have been good…
… it lead to this…
… which lead to this! Great shot Ben!
2013 Galena High Baseball vs. Carson…
The Grizzlies hosted Carson Tuesday for the first of their series… it started out looking like it was going to be quite a game, runs scoring, one team scores, the other answers… then we got to the 4th inning… Carson opened with three runs and the Galena flood gates opened with 9 runs. The game ended in the bottom of the 5th inning with a Ben Barnard grand slam to put the game in the books 17-6!
The series continues at Carson Thursday evening under the lights, 6:00 First pitch. The game is a White out for Carson with a gate promo for wearing white. Get out and support your team for an evening game at Carson High.
Here are a few shots from the 3:45 PM game at Galena…
The ball going out… I usually get it coming in… 🙂 this series in the gallery has both…
… it’s JUST about there…
Is he safe? Is he out?

2013 Carson High Baseball vs. Wooster…
BEAUTIFUL weather today in Carson City!! I’m not going to say anymore about it for fear of the weather gods ruining what we have… 😉
The Senators hosted the Wooster Colts today… There was a new “atmosphere” in the dugout today… nice to see/hear! Hopefully it will continue. The Senators grabbed a win today and travel to Wooster Tuesday.
Just two shots from today’s game, there are more in the gallery…
Joe saw some action today behind the plate… I love when I can get these shots with a clear view of his eyes!
Zak was right on the money with the throw from home… makes Tyler’s job of sticking his hand down there in front of those metal cleats easy, right? 🙂
2013 Carson High Softball & Baseball… March 14, 2013
The Lady Senators hosted McQueen this afternoon in a 13-12 bottom of the 7th inning RBI thriller! Bailey Allen drove in the winning run on a hit to deep right-centerfield! A fun game to watch for sure!
Here are a few shots from the game.

The Baseball team hosted North Valleys at 6:00 PM… not a good result for the fellas tonight… They got behind early and made a good rally but couldn’t put it together in the bottom of the 7th with the bases loaded….
Here’s a shot of the field tonight… shot with my iPhone… panoramic mode… not too bad!
These were all before the sun went down completely… gotta work fast for that sunlight!

2013 Carson Douglas Baseball… Game 1 of 4…
The Mike Bearman Memorial Baseball Tournament concluded today… Carson hosted Douglas for their evening game… (previously scheduled at Reed…). As my normal fashion, I’ll leave the “reporting” to the newspaper guys… but Douglas won 11-1 in six innings…. This game concluded a two day double header each day tournament for each of the teams…
Here are some photos from the game… (more “follies” at the bottom of the post…)
Nolan didn’t even flinch… so much so that at first I didn’t know exactly what had happened… he was trotting off to first, I had to check the photo… 🙂
With six more scheduled home night games for the Senators I’ve got some work to do on getting the white balance “right”… I’m not happy with it… so stay tuned… if you’re not familiar with what white balance is… Your camera is making a decision as to what “white” is… for the most part, Auto White Balance works pretty well… but the lights on the field can cause a great deal of variety of color and temperature of the colors… so the photos can come out looking different that what we might think it really looks like… there are in camera adjustments that can be made as well as software adjustments after in the computer… I like getting it “right” in camera… Next Thursday is the first of the six home night games… I’ll be working on it. 🙂
2013 Carson High Varsity Baseball vs. Elko
First home game… first win of the season for the Senators and for new Head Coach Manoukian! They continue their season on the road tomorrow at Reed High for the Mike Bearman Tournament. (There is a chance that they’ll play Douglas at home Saturday evening (5) instead of at Reed…)
Here’s a few shots from the game today… see below for my photographer follies…. 🙂
Chase… takin’ one for the team…
Was he out? Was he safe?
Two big plays happened in the game that were “memorable”… Luke “powering” through the catcher… which I did “get” but all were blurry (beyond keeping blurry…)… (keep reading…) and this dive by Gehrig… which is also blurry… but this one not near as much… so… how does this happen?

Yes, we have these new fancy cameras with VERY good auto focus… if they’re so great why does this happen? Several factors can be involved… the camera I’m shooting with will shoot 12 frames per second. The autofocus can and does keep up with that… meaning that in-between those 12 frames per second it is in fact trying to focus. Here’s the autofocus “overlay” of the shot above.
See the red square? See that it’s not “on” anything… that red square is where the camera is trying to obtain focus. I chose that point… the best way to try to get consistent results is to use just one point but the catch is that you need to get that point on the player… I missed… This play happened down the third base line… When the pitch was thrown I was kneeling down on the home plate side of the dugout, far enough back that I could not see this area… As I watched the ball go up, and saw Gehrig running for it, the only thing that went through my mind was a similar play that he made at the Galena scrimmage on Saturday… that I missed… so I jumped up, picked up the camera (which sits on a monopod due to weight…) and moved out to where I was clear of the players in the dugout and fired away… and I missed… so as “smart” as these cameras are, sometimes it just does what I’ve told it to do too well….
The situation with Luke was a bit different but also a very common “problem” that sports photographers run into… the camera can grab focus on things that pass in front of the action that you’re trying to shoot… It’s particularly bad in football and basketball… but when you’ve got plays at the plate and the ball being thrown around, all good teams will have players in backup positions… they have to get there somehow… and that’s what the camera can sometimes grab focus on… again, it’s so smart that it grabs focus on that point, it’s doing what I’ve asked… 🙂 … the life of an action photographer.
