2014 Carson Douglas Baseball…

Rivalry games are always entertaining… Darrell called the second of the two games “chippy”… to say the least…I don’t like to be too cliché-ish… but last night, the second of the two games, was very surreal to me…  As many know, I was a soccer player… and while I’m learning, the small idiosyncrasies of baseball still fascinate me…. I explained what happened last night to my dad as the type of thing that Disney puts into a animated movie for parents and kids never understand or in some cases even see them until they’re older…. it’s an atmosphere that I can just try to soak in all the new knowledge of the game….

In case you missed it… here’s 4 ½ innings in under two minutes, the GoPro battery didn’t make it the whole game… 🙂

I also shot stills… not a lot, but some… Here are a few from the night… and I’ll tell you right now, it’s my blog and I’m gonna get a little sentimental here today…. 🙂

It was Senior night Wednesday at Douglas and Thursday at Carson (see Ron’s Photos for the DHS Senior Night Photos…).  Most of these guys don’t know this but I first started shooting these fellas back in 2007… (you don’t believe me… how about Danny Guthrie 2007, Carson American… here… and there’s more on the site… Hey, Jace, TJ’s trying to copy your hair style from 2007… here ) 🙂  To say it’s been journey, is an understatement.  I wish you all the very very best.
140508_7361This photo… I just liked the way this one turned out… kind of a gritty-ness to it… love that the trees in the back have all filled out, helps those backgrounds.  … and I also want to give a special shout out to Dustin… Dustin, in my mind, you’re THE team guy this year.  You were always encouraging your team, cheering, you’re fun to be around in the dugout, and even though you played an important roll on the mound, your persona in the dugout will be what I will always remember about you, it’s a very important part of a team… thank you for that!  I know you felt you had a rough night last night… but that’s what a TEAM sport is about… your guys pulled it together and put one in the win column on a very special night for you fellas.140508_7385 When it’s Carson Douglas… Just KNOW that this guy is probably up to something… 🙂 140508_7402 The play that would send a Carson coach packing… if you want to see the entire play from where I was… it’s HERE…  Here are three shots… no way of seeing the plate from my angle… TJ was up to bat (leftie… thus why I’m where I am…)…140508_7425 140508_7427 The umpire felt strongly… apparently…140508_7437 uh oh… this can’t be good… 🙂 Guess not everyone shared the opinion of the umpire…140508_7439 … and I’m going to end kinda where I started above… with a walk down memory lane.  While the season isn’t quite over (playoffs start next Tuesday), a new face (to some…) has emerged in the last two games for Carson High.  I’ve known him for years… remember those photos from above, same stuff, different year… I know he’ll be a good sport about this… and I look forward to the next three years photographing him pitching for Carson High.  Welcome to Varsity Bryce!140508_7459Know this kid?  Carson City 9-10 All Star @ Governor’s Field during the 2009 Nevada District 1 All Star Tournament.NV1CCLL_090706_0439

2014 Carson Douglas Basketball… at Douglas High

Onto the games…

As I was looking through the photos of the girls game a theme very quickly developed… the girls were all flying! 🙂 Take a look and you’ll see what I mean!

Carly driving, or rather “hovering” to the hoop…140214_4953 McKenna “hovering” down the court…140214_4968 Kelly shooting for three… and… those toes… 🙂140214_4972 I played around with a longer lens tonight… made for some very tightly cropped images in camera… sorry, I’ll stop camera geeking out now…140214_4983 All kidding aside with flying girls and camera geek stuff… The atmosphere for the girls game was great, the girls all played hard and it was exciting to watch… both teams are going onto the regionals, Douglas will host Spanish Springs and Carson will travel to Reno. Good luck to all the teams in the playoffs!!

Onto the Boys game…

I hope people don’t look at me during times like this and think I’m irreverent toward my country when they see me snapping away or in this case making a pano with my phone… As a photographer you’re always trying to make great photos.  In my opinion, a packed house with all the attention on Old Glory with our National Anthem playing is one of the very greatest moments in any competition.  I’ll be honest, I get choked up sometimes.  We take for granted the words and the meaning of it but with everyone of us knowing active military and veterans, it’s a VERY significant moment, God Bless our Troops and God Bless America!  And when I started to see how all of this was setting up, I put down my three DSLR cameras on the floor and reached for my iPhone and grabbed this pano of the “moment”.  Sometimes it’s knowing what tool will do the best job at the moment… $X’s of fancy camera gear laying on the floor can’t capture this so easily.

Oh, and… see what you missed if you weren’t there! Look at that place!

140214AnthemThe boys game was entertaining for an entirely different reason.  When Douglas visited Carson James Herrick, Douglas’ 6′ 10″ center made at least three blocked shots inside when Carson tried to penetrate deeper into the key… and it’s been well known all season that Carson doesn’t have much size and would be need to run a quick outside shooting game with the weapons they have… well that all made for some VERY interesting run of play with these two teams!

This first shot is of James making a block inside during the first half… Carson spent most the rest of the game trying to NOT have this happen!  Check out the video below this photo, it’s a time lapse of this same play…140214_5047

Quick and sneaky was the game plan for Carson… here Cameron Price sneaks in from the far side for an easy layup with the inside vacant of The Big Man…
140214_5052And when Carson did penetrate, get that shot off before The Big Man could get to you…
140214_5056 What do you do when he is over a foot taller than you AND jumps as high off the floor?140214_5067Watching these games and knowing these kids is a lot of fun for me.  Yea, one team wins and one looses so I’m happy for one and sad for another… but when I get to see them excel at “their” move or play it’s particularly rewarding for me…. This photo is the one photo that I was on the line for tonight.  I believe for every year I’ve been covering Austin Evans I’ve tried to make absolute certain that I get him shooting a three… and with him graduating this year I can confidently say, in his last year I grabbed my very favorite of all the years…. Again, check out the time lapse of this shot below, watch closely, it’s quick!

It was also fun to see the adjustment to his outside shot that Carson made… after this one, he had one more opportunity and from my vantage point and to the untrained “Austin follower” it appeared rather cocky but he almost taunted the Carson defender to come at him and when the defender didn’t take the bait, Austin stepped up and hammered a three… needless to say, that didn’t happen again in the game!  Carson put a quick scrappy Kyle Denning in Austin’s face from then on…
140214_5108

When you break down a game and study the stats you quickly realize the little things that made the difference.  For as long as I’ve been shooting in this area (…since 2009…) Douglas has ALWAYS had a pretty lethal three point game.  You take away three point shots from Douglas and the game is equal… it’s the little things right?

Here Pat Johnson shoots for 3 of his 12 points for the night.140214_5115

Both teams will be on the road for the first round of the playoffs.  Douglas will travel to Reed Wednesday and Carson will travel to Spanish Springs.  Best of luck to all the teams in the Regional Playoffs!

2014 Carson Douglas Basketball… at Carson High

As you would expect the Carson Douglas varsity basketball games at Carson did not disappoint!  They meet again on Valentine’s Day at Douglas…

Tonights games were very much rivalry games… here are some images from the night.  See the galleries for more shots from the games.

I love the reflection in the floor… thanks McKenna!140121_4166140121_4237140121_4279140121_4184140121_4298 140121_4304 The “Big” Men inside… here are three blocked shots under the basket…140121_4369140121_4377140121_4383140121_4381140121_4401You’ll need to read the paper to get the scoop on how this all unfolded… basically 1.8 seconds left in OT, Douglas called a time out… the inbound ball hit the rafters in the gym, Carson got the ball back… inbound, shot and I believe rebound, second shot… game over 54 to 52!  What a game!  I’m sure the next will be just as exciting at Douglas!140121_4342

2013 NIAA Northern Division 1 High School Football, Douglas vs. Carson

With football there’s always a winner.  If tied at the end of regulation there’s a “shootout” at  the end to determine the winner.  If you weren’t at the Carson Douglas football game last night at Keith Roman Field at Douglas High you missed a great one!  If you were at the game and you didn’t anticipate what you witnessed, bet you’ll think better next year! 🙂

This year’s game was every bit of what I expected!  Watching what’s been happening on the field and watching the standings I knew all that would be thrown out the window, this is rivalry football and the Carson Douglas game at Douglas last night was a tough battle between two long time rivals.  Here’s some of what I captured last night… you’ll see a theme pretty quickly… or at least I did… 🙂

131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_Joey RunCale Kynett had his hand on this ball for a long time before he eventually created a Chase sandwich with his fellow Douglas defenders and stripped it out of his hands… see the next photo… 🙂

131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_CelebrationCoach Roman talking with the team after the game… For those of you that don’t know or weren’t aware… Carson’s Coach Roman played at Douglas High… the field at Douglas High is named after his dad, who was in attendance at the game last night… What do you suppose it’s like to coach against your alma mater on the field that’s named after your father who’s standing on the Douglas sidelines… and win?131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_Coach RomanThis is a “tradition” that I’m very happy to see each game… the Carson team going over and celebrating with the Carson “fan” student section after the game.
131101_instaimage_Carson High Football_StudentsDuring any game there are moments that you capture and one’s that you miss, every time you set yourself up ready for the play, you’re taking a gamble that you’ll be in the “right” place to capture “the big play”… Last night, no question I missed the play of the game… After seeing the play happen (and saying things I shouldn’t as it was happening because I knew I was missing it…) and thinking about how it happened… I’m not even sure I know where I should have been to capture it… Carson outside defensive back #2 Aaron Perez, who I’ve been trying to capture the whole year without much luck, picked off a pass and ran for a touchdown that tied the game at 13… no question, play of the game… and I missed it.  I’m sorry Mom.  I’m sorry Aaron.

2013 Carson Douglas High School Baseball… mid season tournament

It’s “mid season” time… Spring Break… well… if you’re Washoe County… Carson and Douglas had their Spring Break last week… So goes the majority, so goes the schedule… Spanish Springs is hosting a Spring Break Tournament this week… Day One, originally scheduled for Monday got pushed out 24 hours due to the snow on the fields (thank you!)… Play resumed Tuesday afternoon/evening at Carson High and Spanish Springs….

Carson hosted Douglas for the first game at Carson High… Here are a few shots from the game… I tried something “new”… not sure what I think… I’m not sure if many of you caught the photo that the Nevada Appeal ran awhile back of Tim Lincecum of the SF Giants… this is the same “technique”… if you can call it that… NO Photoshop here, absolutely NONE, this is all in camera… This done in Photoshop would appear much different, less “ghosting” for lack of a better term… (Check out Custom Collages to see an example of that… click here scroll to the bottom…).  It’s something different… I’m gonna continue playing with it… I have some ideas on how to use it a little differently that may give me better results… Stay tuned!

2013 Galena High Baseball vs. Douglas

I’m back posting to the blog! 🙂  Been out to games lately (adding to the galleries…) but just not posting to the blog, I’ve been working on a project for our old time studio in Monterey, CA (Doc Wenzel’s Old Time Portraits) that consumed a lot of time last week… just “implemented” it on Monday this week….

I made the trek up to Galena today to shoot the Galena Douglas game… and just as I figured it was a great game!  This was the second Galena game I’ve been to which ended with a walk off home run to end the game… there’s more to the story though… it’s been the same player in both games…!  This time I got it! 🙂 Go Ben!

SUPER windy & rainy… that’s the beauty of baseball photos, you can’t really tell that, they wear caps! Also with a little overcast the harsh shadows on the faces go away… makes for “better” lighting, even though it was a “yucky” day there’s “better” light so possibly “better” photos…

Here’s some action from the day…

2013 Carson Douglas Baseball… Game 1 of 4…

The Mike Bearman Memorial Baseball Tournament concluded today… Carson hosted Douglas for their evening game… (previously scheduled at Reed…).  As my normal fashion, I’ll leave the “reporting” to the newspaper guys… but Douglas won 11-1 in six innings…. This game concluded a two day double header each day tournament for each of the teams…

Here are some photos from the game… (more “follies” at the bottom of the post…)
